“Two of my favourite things in the world are swimming and cycling… swimming because I love the water and cycling because Hannah teaches us stuff that other teacher’s can’t- jumping, riding steps, wheelies… it’s the best lesson” Year 6 boy at Franche Community Primary School.
Franche have had cycling at school for a whole year now, having been helped by Big Bike Revival (link) last year they are the local leading primary school in cycling (read here ). To kick off Big Bike Revival 2018 Franche added an additional “learn to ride” session to their Friday afternoon enrichment cycling and after school cycling clubs, all set to get the pupils ready to have an epic summer holiday of cycling fun.
Enrichment and after school clubs welcome cyclists, of all abilities, to take on various fun challenges on school grounds from learning to pedal and riding one handed, to competing in small races, riding off road and even down steps! This year we wanted to showcase our “elite” cyclists; 12 individuals with the most promising cycling skills, many of whom only learnt to cycle since Big Bike Revival 2017!
We held a fantastic “Super Cycling Day” at the school where the newly formed “Franche Elite” headed to White Wickets pump track with their regular coach: GB Team Cyclist and 4X Protour Champion Hannah Escott, to test their skills on “the ramps” as the children call them. They all learned new skills, pushed out of their comfort zone and had a great time riding their local community cycling facilities, free for the public 24/7.
Dr Bike fixed 13 of the pupil’s bikes, 5 parent’s bikes, the 9 school bikes and provided maintenance tips on the playground during break times whilst the pupils watched and helped restore their beloved bikes to full working order.
Next up for Franche is a special day at Stourport Sports Club specially built cycling track, new cycle parking as requested by the pupils and the staff and another year of cycling classes as the new year 3 and 4s yearn to be involved in what their predecessors have enjoyed so much.
